Is your LinkedIn profile working hard for you? Or is it languishing and being lazy?

Don’t miss out on the value of this amazing tool!

A standout profile is just one part of an effective LinkedIn strategy, but it’s an important one. What can you do to quickly update your LinkedIn profile? Here are some ideas…

#1 Make it public

Don’t hide on LinkedIn! You want to make sure your image and profile is accessible to everyone, not just your connections. You wouldn’t wear a paper bag on your head at a networking event, so don’t do it on LinkedIn!

#2 Imagery counts

Get rid of that cropped-down photo of you at a wedding or some other random location. Ideally, invest a little money and get some headshots. You will truly be glad you did. If you honestly don’t have a couple of hundred bucks to make this happen, ask someone you trust to take a couple of photos of you from the chest up, looking into the camera. A selfie won’t cut it, be brave and ask a friend to help you out.

Also, take advantage of the acreage at the top of your profile for your banner image. Pick something that matches your brand and style. You can even pop in your contact details in an image overlay.

#3 Say how you give value, not what you ‘do’

You know that little bit under your name and photo where it says something dull like ‘Jane Smith, Owner and Accountant at XYZ Business Services’? Did you know you can manually change it? Spiff it up and give people an idea of how you give value, e.g. ‘Jane Smith – Accounting Professional | Business Builder | Success Mentor’, perhaps?

#4 Pitch your value

Use your bio at the top to sell what you do, especially if you’re a business owner. This is valuable space to quickly tell potential clients why you’re different and how you can help them. It’s not ‘about you’ – it’s about what you’ll do to make an impact for them.

#5 Be detailed, yet readable

Outline your career experience and don’t assume the reader will magically know what your role involved. Spell out your key achievements and capabilities, especially those that are transferable to what you are now doing as a business owner. And remember to break up content into lists and paragraphs – be kind to your reader’s eyes!

More than an online resume…
