e-Books are amazing tools for building your authority as well as giving your potential clients a taste of what working with you is like without having to make a big investment.
But they are also something that requires a bit of dedication to go from ‘good idea’ to reality. Need some help to get started? Here are some tips…
Nail down your topic, then narrow it
It is easy to pick a really broad topic and then get stuck. Maybe you think, ‘I want to write an e-book about building your website yourself’. But that is an incredibly broad topic, with many, many potential chapters. If you want something quickly digested, that funnels buyers into your next level of service, think about your topic in a more niche way.
Perhaps your e-book could instead focus on selecting the right plugins for your website, or how to maximise your site’s security. You’re narrowing down the topic into a manageable chunk and ideally, directly tying it to a product or service you want to sell.
Brainstorm before writing
Avoid leaping straight into the generation of words. Brainstorm the key points you want to cover – then shift them around into the optimal order.
Draft without stopping
Sit down without distraction (that includes Facebook and your phone) and just write. Get it all down – either on the computer or go old school route with pen and paper. Write and write and write.
Put it away
Leave it alone for a few days or longer. You can’t edit properly when it’s fresh.
Cull. And cull some more. Then get a friend to slice and dice.
Be brutal and get rid of the fluff. Keep the essentials. Check that it flows. Then ask someone else (who has great writing and editing skills) to review it and cull some more – and to look for gaps.
Make it snazzy
Whether you make something simple in Word and PDF it, create it in Canva, or outsource it to a designer, at a minimum, remember to incorporate some brand styling. It needs to ‘look’ like your business.
Leverage your work
You’ve put all the effort into making the e-book, you’ve got people buying it, now make sure you follow up. Create an email sequence making them aware of the ‘next steps’ they can take with your services. Already have a relationship with a buyer? Follow up with them!
